What is a Topographic Map?
A topographic map is a detailed, accurate and a geographically correct representation of man-made and natural features on the ground. One of the distinguished aspects of topographic maps is the use of contour lines to show elevation of the land. Another important component is a geographic and metric grid allowing the user to determine precise location of features on the map. Features on a typical topographic map can be grouped into the following categories:
- Populated places
- Elevation information
- Hydrographic objects
- Vegetation
- Transportation
- Utilities and industry
- Names and feature characteristics
Its publisher/producer, scale, series number, and a sheet number or sheet name unique within a given series characterizes each topographic map.
