VMAP Level 0
Vector Map Level 0 (VMAP0) is an updated version of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) Digital Chart of the World (DCW) dataset. VMAP0 provides worldwide coverage of GIS data at 1:1,000,000 scale. This global coverage is divided into four regions, and is available on between 4 and 12 CD-ROMs, depending on format:
- Europe/Northern Asia (EURNASIA)
- South America/Africa/Antarctica (SOAMAFR)
- North America (NOAMER)
- Southeast Asia/Australia (SASAUS)
The primary source for VMAP0 is the 1:1,000,000 scale Operational Navigation Chart (ONC) series. The VMAP0 dataset is divided into 10 thematic layers:
- Boundaries
- Data Quality
- Elevation
- Hydrography
- Industry
- Physiography
- Population
- Transportation
- Utilities
- Vegetation
VMAP0 data can be easily viewed or imported with a number of software programs including ESRI's suite of products (ArcInfo, ArcGIS, ArcView) and MapInfo.
The original data structure is Vector Product Format (VPF) to US Military Standard (MIL-STD-2407), which is compliant with the international standard, Digital Geographic Information Exchange Standard (DIGEST) Annex C. The VMAP Level 0 feature and attribute content is defined in the US Military Specification for VMAP Level 0 (MIL-V-89039).
