The .tif file is brought into image processing software
At least 13 points on each map are utilized: 1 point on each corner, 1 point at the mid-point along each side, 1 map-center point, and at least 4 additional points dispersed across the map
Coordinates from the map are entered as input points
The software is used to match these input points to the corresponding points on the map
The map is then adjusted, pixel by pixel, into this coordinate space
