How We Georeference Raster Maps

What are the steps involved?

Georeferencing steps:
  • The map is scanned as a raster .tif file
  • The .tif file is brought into image processing software
  • At least 13 points on each map are utilized: 1 point on each corner, 1 point at the mid-point along each side, 1 map-center point, and at least 4 additional points dispersed across the map
  • Coordinates from the map are entered as input points
  • The software is used to match these input points to the corresponding points on the map
  • The map is then adjusted, pixel by pixel, into this coordinate space
